Normal glucose for non diabetic
Question
My husband is 38 and anemic. He takes over the cointer iron pills once a day.
He recently purchased a monitor so that he could keep track of his hemoglobin levels.
Today the monitor showed that his glucose level was 294 but he is not a diabetic.
He ate 3 hours prior to taking the test. What is a normal glucose for a non diabetic?

Hi,
Dr.Albana here assisting.
I have gone through the medical history of your husband and understood your concerns.
There are a few points to remember regarding the health problems of your husband:
– you say he is anemic. It is not normal for young males to be anemic. Unless there are other serious issues like bleeding anywhere in his body (including internal organs); trauma or malnutrition
– next, you say that the first measure of blood sugar 3 hours after eating was 294 mg/dL. It is high taking into account that random blood sugar for non-diabetic persons ranges from 70 to up to 160 mg/dL.
While, 3 hours after eating ranges less than 140 mg/dL.
The measurement your husband did was a random blood glucose which resulted really high (294). Here I need to stop and ask if he:
– has taken any sugary drink in between?
– or if he has taken any pill?
Furthermore, I would ask to repeat testing again to confirm if he is diabetic or not (which might explain he being anemic):
– fasting blood sugar
– oral glucose tolerance test
– HbA1C test
Once you get the results, can send to me for further analysis and guidance.
Hope this helps.

Good morning thank you for your response.
My husband took his sugar again this morning approx 30 minutes after having coffee with 2 teaspoons of sugar and no food for the last 12 hours and his blood sugar is up to 331.
To answer your questions he has no internal bleeding, no sugary drinks or pills prior to the first reading. And no food this morning.
Hi back my dear,
The blood sugar level he measured this morning was really high.
A complete blood work is highly recommended including:
– another fasting blood glucose
– HbA1C test
– thyroid function test
– urine analysis
– stool examination for occult blood
These are tests that you should run in your nearby lab.
By the way, is he having any other symptoms:
– frequent urination?
– unusual thirst?
– chronic fatigue?
All the best.
