Acne and probiotics

Question

Hello,

I have acne. Can I start using probiotics by myself for 2-4 weeks because of acne? (My diet is pretty good and i’m 21yo male).

Thank you.

  1. Hello,

Thank you for trusting doctor-online-now.com your concern. Please find my answer as following.

Probiotics are the normal microbiota found in our guts and skin. You are right, there is great benefit if you can use them:
    1. If you apply directly into your skin, then, the microbiota will be stabilized, so, the effects of acne will get reduced.
The probiotics will serve as protective shield when applied locally. When skin is facing bad bacteria or parasites, an immune response will start finishing in getting acne aggravated. When probiotics are applied locally, this immune response will not be present, thus, no inflammation will come to the end.

Another effect noted is calming and anti-microbic properties.

    2. If you use orally, early in the morning (on empty stomach), benefits you get as per “gut-brain-skin axis” theory.
Stress and eating non-healthy foods can cause alteration in gut microbiota (lack of good bacteria). This leads to more bad bacteria living in the guts which releases the bad toxins inside the gut and bloodstream.
These toxins will induce inflammation all over the body especially in more sensitive parts as face skin which is more prone to acne.

If we do regulate the gut work, this inflammation won’t get induced, thus, acne will get cleared or not precipitated.

I usually recommend my patients to apply yogurt locally on the skin or there are some cream products containing good bacteria (lactobacilli).
Furthermore you can take a probiotic supplement early in the morning each day for 4 weeks first, then, see the difference.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know if you have any other concern.
