Can reduce morning Metformin dose with FBS level below 130mg/dL?
Question
Hello, I am a diabetic, type 2, taking metformin 500mg 1 tab in the morning and 1 in the evening. My FBS level is below 130 mg/dl for the last 2 years and my A1C is 6% (test done 1 month ago). My question is :is there a possibility of reducing the tablet i take i.e.getting rid of the morning or the evening dose? Thank you. Mengistu |

Hello Mengistu,
I have just received your query and here’s my advice.
You say that your fasting blood glucose level (FBS) is below 130 mg/dL for the last couple of years. Furthermore, your HBA1C level is 6%. All these figures seem perfect to me.
You are taking Metformin 500 mg 1 tablet in the morning and 1 in the evening.
And with all this progress, I’d suggest to reduce the dose half tablet in the morning and the other half in the evening. However, first I need to know what’s your blood sugar 2 hours after eating (oral glucose tolerance test result)?
Please send to me.
If that is ok, then, start with reducing the dose of metformin in half for the next month. Then, we can continue lowering the dose further.
Hope this answers your query. Please send the requested results to me.
