Hello Prakash,
I understand your worries.
Being a diabetic won’t exclude the fact to become a mother. Yes, she will have a baby, but we as medical team will give a few recommendations before thinking for a baby and during pregnancy. This is to protect the new mother to be and the incoming baby to be healthy.
1. When she starts to think about having a baby, a good consultation with gynecologist and diabetes doctor should be conducted. We should make sure her blood sugar levels are well controlled before getting pregnant. The goal is to keep her blood glucose within the ideal level (70 – 100 mg/dL fasting).
Sugar levels should be less than 120 mg/dL two hours after eating; and before bedtime snack around 100 to 140 mg/dL.
There are a few tests to run for this purpose:
– fasting blood sugar
– HBA1C test to analyze the mean of her blood sugar levels for the last 3 months
– urine analysis to exclude any infection or other pathology
– kidney/liver/pancreas function test
– lipid profile testing
– complete blood count to rule out anemia
– Foot/eye examination
– EKG
2. During pregnancy, continue consultation with diabetes specialist and nutritionist. Should prepare good gestational diabetes diet plan to prevent birth effects on first months of life and nutrient deficiencies after giving birth.
Insulin is the recommended medication during pregnancy together with diet and lifestyle changes. She might need more insulin dosage the first 3 months of pregnancy.
After giving birth, this dosage might be reduced (you won’t need such high dosage).
3. Diabetic patients can carry their babies until full term if blood sugar is completely controlled. However, doctors would prefer ending pregnancy around 38 or 39 th week with C-section. This is individual though.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other concern. I’d be glad to assist you further.
