Small Hard Bone-like Bump in the Middle of Right Hand

Question

Hello Doctor,

My name is Siska.

I have this one question to ask you and its about my right hand. I think I’ve got a bone or something sticking out in the middle of my right hand for about 4 years. Its a small hard bump and it feels like a bone.

It didn’t really bother me as it didn’t cause any pain or anything. But recently,it started to bother me and I’m not comfortable with it cause I’ve been getting sharp pain in my wrist while doing my workouts, writing or any other daily routine that involves hand.

What cause of this and what should I do?
Thank You Doctor
regards

  1. Hello Siska,

    Dr.Albana here assisting.

I have gone through your medical history and the photo you uploaded and here is my advice.

From what you are describing, and from what I’ve noted from the photo you sent in, I think the hard bump sticking out in the middle of your right hand could be a ganglion cyst.

This is a non-cancerous bump, containing a bit of liquid inside. Usually, it is there harmless without causing any symptom as in your case.
But sometimes it might put pressure in the nearby nerves causing the pain you are currently feeling.

I would suggest to consult with an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible. An x-ray and ultrasound examination of the bump and right hand might be carried out to determine the right diagnosis.

However, Heberden’s node and Bouchard’s node should be also ruled out especially if a personal history of osteoarthritis.

For the moment, I can suggest to consult with orthopedic specialist.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other concern.
