My doctor prescribed Metformin HCL 500 mg
Question
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 weeks ago.
My doctor prescribed Metformin HCL 500 mg.
I have been making changes to my diet and started walking a few days ago.
My fasting blood sugar still remains between 200 – 267 this morning.
I am concerned and wondering the medication should be working by now.

Hello!
Thank you for sharing your health concern with us!
Metformin is a first choice medicine in newly diagnosed with diabetes. Generally the final dose of metformin is established by the body weight and the blood sugar level. This drug generally is started gradually, as in some patients it gives gastrointestinal disorders. The lowest dose with which this medicament may start is 500 mg, than the dose may increase gradually, based on the blood sugar levels.
If your FBG is around 200 mg/dl you should have another appointment with your doctor, may be is time to increase the daily dose of metformin.
Meantime I recommend you to have a good distribution of the meals. Between the three main meals, integrate a fruit. Try not using street foods, sweets, fruit juices (even if they are fresh fruit juices), pastes, etc. Keep walking as much as you can.
Hope I helped answering you!
