Not eating for about 12 hours the test showed 164mg/dL

Question

Hello Doctor, after a blood sugar test early in the morning after not eating for about 12 hours the test showed 164mg/dL.

Please could you explain what it means for me. Will cutting down on carbohydrates, increasing protein help?

Your answer will be much appreciated

  1. Hi,

    I understand your concern.

Having blood sugar level of 164 mg/dL after fasting for 12 hours is considered a bit higher than normal. If not diabetic, further diagnostic tests are highly recommended to determine the right diagnosis:
    – oral glucose tolerance test
    – HbA1C test

If diabetic, then, it could be considered as almost good diabetes control.

In either cases, immediate changes in your diet and lifestyle habits are highly recommended. Yes, cutting carbohydrates down can help in adjusting blood sugar levels. However, that is not enough. I cannot say to avoid them as your brain need energy which is mainly provided by carbohydrates.
I am advising to eat wisely healthy. Following are some common sense that you can follow:
    – have frequent meals but in small portions
    – proteins are good to consume especially when it comes to nuts (walnut, almond, hazelnut, etc)
    – beans, legumes, lentils, are also good food choices
    – fresh fruits and vegetables are also good
    – Greek yoghurt is another choice, can mix with fresh fruits or vegetables or with nuts
    – when it comes to meat, try to choose lean meat; avoid pork origin
    – increase water intake; avoid sugary juice; fresh squeezed orange or fruits/vegetables are good choice
    – try to have short walking after each meal to help digestion and burn the calories

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have further queries.
    Dr.Albana
